Our garden design and technology teams have been collaborating for months to bring this project to life for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Tom Massey is a London-based landscape and garden designer known for his innovative and sustainable approach. Since founding Tom Massey Studio in 2015, he has earned widespread recognition for creating distinctive gardens for private clients, public spaces, and major shows in the UK and internationally.
Celebrated for his bold and thought-provoking designs, Tom draws inspiration from the natural world. His work has received multiple accolades, including a gold medal and the BBC People’s Choice Award for the Yeo Valley Organic Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2021, and a gold medal for the WaterAid Garden, designed in collaboration with Je Ahn (Studio Weave), in 2024.
In addition to his studio practice, Tom appears regularly on BBC gardening programmes and is the author of RHS Resilient Garden, a guide to designing landscapes that can adapt to the pressures of a changing climate.
Je Ahn is the Founding Director of Studio Weave, where he merges a passion for the social impact of architecture with technical precision. Overseeing diverse projects since the studio's inception, he has worked on large-scale housing, civic infrastructure, schools, and public realm initiatives, focused on effective place-making.
Currently, he is involved in the Vestry House Museum, a project under construction set to open in early 2026, and designing welcome pavilions and landscapes for the British Museum. Recognised nationally and internationally with accolades like AJ 40 under 40, Je is driven by a commitment to collaboration, working closely with communities to tackle complex design challenges.
His research initiatives have produced valuable guidelines and publications, such as “Living Closer: The Many Faces of Co-housing” and TfL’s “Small Change, Big Impact.” Je is skilled in managing projects with multiple stakeholders, emphasising successful partnerships and innovative solutions that blend historic craftsmanship with modern digital technology.
I led the design and development team to deliver the intelligence behind the garden, focusing on the experience that people have when they visit us in Chelsea.
I've helped lead the overall strategy for the project, building from the initial vision to ensure that challenges are overcome and great ideas are incorporated - it's been my job to create a platform for each project member and partner to showcase the best of their abilities.
As the Technical Lead and Architect on this project, I set the overall technical direction while staying hands-on with the code. I designed the architecture to make sure it’s scalable and maintainable, help troubleshoot complex issues, and guide this wonderful team to build things the right way.
I worked on the experience design for the intelligent garden, this includes the control room screens and the web application.
Created all the visual elements for the control room screens and the website, ensuring they are fully responsive, accessible, and sustainable.
I helped guide the design, technical implementation and scope of the Garden.
I worried about gathering Data & Sensors: Creating, designing, building, soldering and coding the sensors in a way that a hobbyist could do at home, building and repurposing off the shelf products to feed the intelligence.
Developed the web app and control room screens, ensuring pixel-perfect alignment with the designs.
I made our trees talk! I have implemented a GenAI solution to allow visitors to have a conversation in natural language.
I worked with the team to develop sustainable by design principles to embed into development, ensuring sustainability was at the core of every decision we made. As an AI consultant and previous co-chair at the Green Software Foundation, I'm motivated by how we can use AI as a power for good and tool to overcome challenges in the climate crisis.
I worked with the team to embed sustainability into the Intelligent Garden. By considering Nature at every decision making step I supported the technical team (UX, UI, Apps & Infra, AI) in building a web application that aligns with the Green Software Principles.
I developed backend functions to analyse telemetry data from tree, weather, and water sensors, generating summary data for insightful data visualisation.
I deployed a secure and scalable Azure cloud infrastructure to host the Web Application.
Responsible for overseeing the planning, design, execution, and reporting of tests to ensure that the Avanade Intelligent Garden meets quality standards.
For the RHS project, I acted as a Security Architect and Advisor, designing security frameworks, assessing risks, and ensuring systems were secure and compliant with industry standards.
