Hortus Loci

Hortus Loci

Contract grown plants and trees

Launched in 2011 by nurserymen Mark Straver & Robin Wallis, Hortus Loci is a unique breed of plant nursery. Our aim is to supply the best plants possible. To achieve this, we propagate 80% of plants on site. We source other plants as liners, plugs or Jumbo Plugs from leading specialist growers in the UK, then tailor our husbandry techniques to meet the needs of all the plants we grow. While most UK suppliers offer perennials in 2-litre pots, we grow them on into 3-litre containers or even taller long-toms for deeper-rooting species – minimising stress throughout the growing season. In addition, most UK plant suppliers choose two (or maybe three) different composts, whereas we’ve developed six separate formulations to meet our plants’ individual needs.

At our nursery we grow trees with character, in all varieties, shapes and sizes: from small shrubs to very mature climbing trees, which are sometimes as much as a hundred years old. We give our customers peace of mind as a total supplier of special project planting, from the smallest flower bulb to the largest tree.

Dark Matter Labs

Dark Matter Labs

Consultation

At Dark Matter Labs, we view the interconnected crises of our time as symptoms of a deeper, structural miscoding of our economic systems. We understand these codes to be physical (e.g. biodiversity, energy, labour and materials), structural (e.g. money creation, embedded inequality and private property rights) and psychological (e.g. failure of the imagination).

Recognising the complex, entangled reality of living systems, we are exploring alternative pathways for organising society and stewarding the shared planetary commons. Our working hypothesis is that these pathways must be rooted in a radical reframing of our relationship to everything; from technology and money to land and the other-than-human world. We are framing this transformation as a shift towards Life-Ennobling Economies.
